Located on 14th and Quincy Streets, this monastery is called Mount St.
Sepulchre, The Holy Land of America. This century-old monastery is one
of Washington's hidden delights. The garden, set on a hillside and
reached by winding paths, is full of big trees and places to sit quietly
among the flowers and small outdoor shrines. Its replicas of Holy Land
shrines include the Grotto of Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Holy Sepulchre in
Jerusalem and the Roman Catacombs. The public is allowed to view the
upper church's full-scale replicas of Holy Land shrines. In the lower
church, visitors will find a replica of the Roman catacombs, which can
only be seen on scheduled tours. Guided tours last about 45 minutes.
Admission is free. The grounds of the Monastery are open daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; no tour is required. The Catacombs can be visited only when on a tour Tours of the Monastery and shrines are given daily on the hours at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Free parking is located across the street.
The Time Has Come… Summers almost here, and you know what that means? Bathing suit season!? No, no, no, it’s the last month the camera club meets weekly….everyone together - aaawww! But this is a fun month to attend. Make sure you’re here for the business meeting, so you can help vote for photo themes for next years contest, as well as offices and any changes in the club. The club events contest is a big one. You can enter ONE photo into each category (digital, mono, slide, and color print) from every fieldtrip or designated club event. The grand prize winner from the nights contest wins (drum roll) a free membership for next year! Our last meeting of the month is our banquet. This year the dinner will be held at the very picturesque, Window on the Bay restaurant. We will be able to enjoy a night of great drinks, great food and of course great company. The photographer of the year and other awards will be awarded that night. That concludes the 2007-2008 camera club season, but don’t fret, there will be a fieldtrip in June and August. There is also talk of a cook-out during the summer, so you can get your photography talk fix.

Add A Realistic Rainbow To A Photo
Step 1: Add A New Layer Above The Background Layer With the image open in Photoshop, if we look over in the Layers palette, we can see that we currently have one layer, the Background layer, which contains our image:
Photoshop Tutorials: The Layers palette showing the Background layer. The first thing we need to do is add a new blank layer above the Background layer. To do that, click on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette:
Photoshop Tutorials: Click the "New Layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. Photoshop will add a new blank layer above the Background layer and will name it "Layer 1". Double-click directly on the name of the layer and rename it to "Rainbow", since we'll be using this layer to add our rainbow:
Photoshop Tutorials: Double-click on the new layer's name and rename it "Rainbow". Step 2: Select The Rainbow Gradient You may not know it, but Photoshop comes with a ready-made rainbow for us to use, but it's not available by default. We need to load it manually. To do that, first grab your Gradient tool from the Tools palette, or press G on your keyboard to quickly select it:
Photoshop Tutorials: Select the Gradient tool from the Tools palette or press "G" for the keyboard shortcut. Then, with the Gradient tool selected, click on the Gradient Picker in the Options Bar at the top of the screen:
Photoshop Tutorials: Click on the Gradient Picker in the Options Bar. This brings up Photoshop's Gradient Editor. We're going to select the rainbow gradient, or at least, we will once we've loaded it. By default, the rainbow gradient isn't in the list, but no worries. Loading it is easy. Simply click on the right-pointing arrow in the top right of the Gradient Editor:
Photoshop Tutorials: Click the right-pointing arrow in the top right of the Gradient Editor. Then click on the Special Effects gradients near the bottom of the list that appears to load them:
Photoshop Tutorials: Select the "Special Effects" gradients from the list. Photoshop will ask you if you want to replace the original gradients with the Special Effects gradients or simply append them to the bottom of the list. Click Append so you'll still have the original gradients available, and the new Special Effects ones will be added below them:
Photoshop Tutorials: Click "Append" to add the new "Special Effects" gradients in with the original gradients. With the new Special Effects gradients added, the one we want - Russell's Rainbow - is the last one at the bottom. If you have your Tool Tips enabled in Photoshop's Preferences, you'll see the name "Russell's Rainbow" appear if you hover your mouse over the gradient for a second or two. Click on it to select it.
Around Town
Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s 2008 Save the Bay photo contest is open to
both amateur and professional photographers. CBF is seeking photographs
that illustrate the positive aspects of the Bay and its rivers and
streams.
Official judging will be conducted by a panel of CBF employees. The public will also be able to vote online for their favorite photo. The first prize-winning photograph will appear in CBF’s 2009 calendar. All winners will receive a one-year membership to CBF and a cash award, and have their photos displayed on CBF’s website and in the next quarterly Save the Bay magazine.
Submissions will be accepted online until May 30, 2008. Winners will be notified of the outcome, and their images will be posted online, by June 30. The Viewers’ Choice photo will be posted online by June 16.
