Welcome Back

I hope everyone had a nice, long hot summer cause it’s time to bring in the cold autumn weather and the Arundel Camera Club! Hopefully you were able to make it to the fieldtrips or the cookout the Betty Harris was so kind to host. As mentioned above there were some changes made to the contest rules. Color prints and digital entries require 50 points to advance to Unlimited. If you are the lucky winner of a 1st , 2nd , 3rd or 4th place, you may not re-enter the same photo in another category, in other words once it wins it’s done. Also a picture can be entered no more than five times total between all the categories. So, good luck to all and I look forward to seeing everyone’s master pieces!

Reminder: Themes for the month March

Monochrome - high key/low key

Slide - architecture

Color Prints - glass

Digital - transportation

File Synchronization
By John Milleker Jr.

When you think of it, digital and film shooting is a lot alike. That is,
up until the shutter closes. Film shooters get their images developed and
store the negatives in a cool, dry place. Done. Archiving digital
negatives? Much more complicated.

I've been recommending that images are backed up on Hard Drives for awhile
now, and I appreciate the fact that some people are completely happy with
optical backups too. Either way, synchronization applies to everyone. Even
if the last step of your archiving process is to create a DVD, you must
still keep that image safe during post processing and until you create
your backup. What happens if something happens to your images before you
make that disc? You really need to practice redundancy from start to
finish.

When you get your images into your computer, make a copy. Preferably on a
different hard drive and preferably to a completely different computer
altogether. Hard drives die and while 'clean houses' can recover data off
dead drives, you'll wish you were spending the money they charge on some
nice new glass instead.

This article is about how to make sure you have solid copies of your
images. No matter if you are backing them up before you burn them to disc
or if your end result is archiving your images to hard drive.
Synchronization is the same.

Our goal is to synchronize your two image folders. Original and copy,
source and destination. We must make sure that at the time you synchronize
those folders, every single piece of information is like a mirror copy of
each other. Sure, we have the copy feature that comes with your operating
system but there are problems with that. First, if you are copying a group
of folders and the process errors out, where did it leave off? Usually you
need to start the copy all over again. Also, if you are copying new data
to your backup folder and some of the data is the same you'll be
overwriting files which is a waste of time.

Enter synchronization programs, my favorite at the time of this article is
Microsoft's SyncToy. Not only is it a good program, it is free as well.
Mac users should search for synchronization programs and should be able to
find a few good ones. The settings I discuss below should pretty much be
the same on any program you use.

SyncToy allows you to choose two directories. A 'Left Folder' which is
your source and a 'Right Folder' which is your destination. Source is
always your live, original location and Destination is where you want to
copy to. Once you have selected both folders click next and you are asked
how you would like your data handled. You have three options.

Synchronize: New and updated files are copied to both folders. If you have
new data on the Left folder, it is copied to the Right. If you have new
data on the Right, it is copied to the Left. Anything renamed and deleted
on either folder are mirrored on the other folder. (For example, you have
your folders synchronized. If SyncToy notices that you deleted a file or
renamed a file on one folder, it will make sure that action is completed
on the other folder too).

Echo: Same as Synchronize but changes happen ONLY if they happened on the
Left folder. Renames and Deletes on the Left are repeated on the Right,
Renames and Deletes on the Right are ignored.

Contribute: Same as Synchronize but only Renames are repeated from Left to
Right only, if you delete a file on one folder, it is NOT repeated on the
other folder.

Personally, I run the Contribute scheme because there have been times when
I have accidentally deleted a file on the Left folder and if it would have
repeated that on the Right folder, I would have been missing a perfectly
good file.

Once these are set you can press the Preview button. Preview looks at both
folders and tells you what is different. It will tell you how many
Renames, New files and New Folders there are. It will also tell you how
many files it looked at and how much data it saved you by checking out
both folders and only copying what it needs. When you are ready, Press Run
to start the process and everything will be Synchronized.

SyncToy has been an integral part of my Digital Asset Management scheme
and has saved me countless hours of copying files, folders and verifying
that everything has been copied down to the smallest files. Give a
synchronization program a try and I'm sure you'll ditch the simple copy
feature of your operating system.

The URL to Microsoft SyncToy 2.0 is a long one, load up your favorite
search engine and search for 'SyncToy 2'. Only download SyncToy from
Microsoft.com.
