Congratulations gentlemen!
What was.......
Our October guest speakers brought great ideas, inspiration and lots of information. First up - Ferrell McCollough with his incredible photos of weaving and wandering incense smoke and perfectly planned shots of shattering liquid filled glasses. McCullough’s secret for capturing such perfectly timed shot’s - a microphone triggered the camera’s flash in a darkroom as he dropped colored liquid filled glasses to a hard surface. In addition to sharing his wonderful work, he came baring gifts! Well, sort of. McCollough brought the "Shutter Hat" - a waterproof, lightweight fabric cover for your camera that he designed. Many members lined up (including yours truly) to purchase this handy devise. For more information on purchasing visit www.theshutterhut.com or call FM Photography at 301-497-9099.
Next up - our very own contest chair and "all around nice guy" Chip Bulgin. He was kind enough to give us a crash course in studio lighting for free! It should be noted that Chip has taught several studio lighting classes and upon occasions shots jewelry and other products for commercial clients such as Tiffany, Cartier, Polk Audio and ITT Canon. Chip not only brought lights galore, he also brought the lovely and very cooperative Connie Groah of Barefoot Photography as his muse. The main focus of the night were light modifiers and how they can change the quality of light. Light modifiers allow you to modify your light, angle your light, direct your light and filter your light source. Chip suggested www.alienbees.com or Severna Park Photo as a good source for a lighting starter kit for beginners. A quick synopsis of the night - a hard, little light source equals bad, and a soft, big light source equals good. But rules are meant to be broken.
What’s To Come
Our speaker on November 1 is Jennifer Bodine, the daughter of legendary photographer A. Audrey Bodine. There will be a gallery showing of his work at the Kathleen Ewing Gallery at 1609 Connecticut Ave, NW, Washington DC from Nov 3 until Dec 22. There is a reception Friday, Nov. 3rd 6-8pm www.kathleenewinggallery.com
The last meeting of November brings table top night. The program planners have talk Chip Bulgin and John Milleker into bringing their lighting equipment to the meeting. The plan is for everyone to have a turn using their lights with your subject. So bring in whatever you want to take pictures of and they will light it beautifully, and hopefully you’ll get some great still life shots.
