A Big Night for Prints

This month’s contest theme was animals, and boy did it seem to hit a sweet spot for our members. Vying for the top spots were animals from the other side of the globe, to the photographer that was lucky enough to capture something special right in their own backyard. With over a hundred entries to judge there was only one man perfect for the job - Jack Mills wildlife photographer. Pursuing his love of the outdoors and his passion for photography, Jack travels throughout North America capturing his special wildlife portraits. His work is published regularly in books, calendars, magazines and web sites. His published credits include: Ducks Unlimited, National Wildlife Federation, Nature Conservancy, American Hunter, Defenders of Wildlife, Virginia Wildlife, West Virginia Wildlife, Popular Photography, Chesapeake Life and Chesapeake Bay magazines. Even though a member or two were heard saying "there goes my wildlife photos" , Jack reminded us that it comes down to personal preference and not to get discouraged. So he took the bull by the horns and plowed through our stacks of photos, giving us great critique and suggestions for future endeavors. For anyone interested Jack also teaches wildlife photography seminars, workshops and leads photo tours sharing his techniques for nature photography in the field. Our own Dick Chomitz and Betty Harris joined Jack for a workshop and got some winners out of it. Thanks to our wildlife judges for taking on the big task this month.

And as promised, the missed digital contest results…..

What was.......

With November being a short month for club meetings we were only able to fit in one speaker, but what a treat she was! Jennifer Bodine came and shared memories and images by her father, A. Aubrey Bodine. He began working for the Baltimore Sun as an errand boy in the Circulation Department at the age of 14. His training in photography took place while on the job at the paper, though he frequently took photographs with a box camera as a hobby. Members were delighted to hear that at the age of 18, Bodine joined the Baltimore Camera Club where he learned the artistic side of photography. Bodine worked his way up to commercial photographer in the advertising department. After his success in taking over temporarily in the stead of the paper's commercial photographer, Bodine became photographer for the Baltimore Sunday Sun for 43 years. Jennifer spoke of how dedicated he was to his craft, "it didn’t matter where they were going, if he saw a picture they stopped". We all could defiantly relate. A little piece of advise passed down from Bodine himself - "Join a camera club, enter the contests but don’t be disappointed when your first masterpiece is thrown out." It was certainly a night to remember.

There will be a gallery showing of his work at the Kathleen Ewing Gallery at 1609 Connecticut Ave, NW, Washington DC from Nov 3 until Dec 22. There is a reception Friday, Nov. 3rd 6-8pm www.kathleenewinggallery.com

What’s To Come……

The last meeting of November brings table top night. The program planners have talk Chip Bulgin and John Milleker into bringing their lighting equipment to the meeting. The plan is for everyone to have a turn using their lights with your subject. So bring in whatever you want to take pictures of and they will light it beautifully, and hopefully you’ll get some great still life shots.

Ernie and Mary Swanson have graciously opened their home to host the annual Christmas party. Guests are asked to bring a salad/appetizer or dessert of some sort. Soda will be provided, but if you prefer something on the heavier side it’s B.Y.O.B. There will be a gift exchange, so bring a wrapped gift if you wish to participate. I’m sure a good time will be had by all.

A reminder to be on the look out for entries fitting March’s contest themes.
