Member News

Congratulations to our own Chuck Gallegos for earning a honorable mention for “Promise of Spring” in the 2007 Maryland Natural Resource Magazine Photo Contest. Nearly 400 photographers entered over 1,600 photographs into this year’s contest, with every county in the state represented.

Congratulations also to Howard Penn, President of the camera club. His picture of a sleeping flamingo made it into the Maryland Zoo 2008 calendar.

Richard Chomitz will be having a photo exhibit in Annapolis at Annapolis City Hall. The reception is from 5 - 7PM on November 6.

Programs

The day had finally come, Tony Sweet had come to talk to packed room full of anxious club members. With eyes and ears open we waited for the slide show to start. Using images from his newest book, 'Water, Ice and Fog' he spoke to us on the "Art of Interpretation". Tony had a lot of what he called "wet belly photography" (dew drop photos). He suggested shooting dew drops on a sunny day to get speckular highlights. Don't forget the simple things, a rich blue sky can make a great backdrop for close-up photography. Take the polarizer off, glare can be your friend. And most importantly, know the lay of the land. Visit a particular spot at all times of the day, and all types of weather to learn how the light hits your subject. Tony also left us with a little gift in a way. He talked a little about the Lensbaby and Nik Software. If you visit their websites and purchase something, you can get a discount using the discount code he gave us: lensbabies.com niksoftware.com

discount code: Sweet07 discount code: Sweet07

The second program of the month brought us tips on Photoshop. Our own Howard Penn showed us how to use the gradient tool to eliminate a busy background. Dick Chomitz gave us a demonstration on Pro Show Gold and the uses for creating a slide show of our work. Chuck Gallegos and John Milleker also spoke to the club on various enhancements and tools. They were kind enough to put every step on paper and hand them out.

Monochrome Conversion by Chuck Gallegos

1. Add solid black fill layer

Layer/New Fill Layer/Solid Color, Mode: Color, Name layer (optional)/OK

Select black for fill color, or 0/0/0 for RGB color values.

This is the straight desaturation view.

2. Underneath this layer, add Color Balance layer

Layer/New Adjustment Layer/Color Balance

Click on Shadows and adjust color sliders (mostly blues for shadows)

Click on Highlights and adjust color sliders (mostly reds and greens)

3. Above fill layer, add Curves layer to add contrast for midtones.

4. Sharpen, print, enter at Camera Club, take home ribbon.

Fixing weak skies

1. Select sky, and save selection

2. Feather (ca. 25, but will likely need adjustment)

3. Copy and paste into new layer.

4. In Layers Palette, use pull-down to change view mode from Normal to Color

Reduce layer opacity if too dark.

Repeat from 2 with more or less feathering if edge artifacts are pronounced.

5. If too light, re-select sky

6. Feather

7. Add Levels Layer, use slider to darken

To work on specific colors:

8. Use Polygon Select Tool to draw coarse boarder around sky. Feather selection, ca.50

9. Within coarse selection, use Color Range under Select menu. Use leftmost eye dropper to select desired color. Adjust feathering to produce gradual transition.

10. Add adjustment layer (Levels, Color Balance, Curves, Hue/Saturation) to darken, lighten, or enhance color as desired.

11. Sharpen, print, enter at Camera Club, take home ribbon.

My Top Five Must - Have Photoshop Tools

By John Milleker

1. Fade

Sometimes we apply a setting or filter that just is too much. Before you undo and go back to re-apply the edit try the Fade command. Go to Edit, Fade (the name of the last edit you did). Now you can adjust a slider from 0% to 100% to have photoshop fade the command.

2. The Ruler Tool

Want and easy way to straighten up those horizons? Use the Ruler Tool (paired with the eye dropper tools) and draw a line on your horizon. Go to Image, Rotate Canvas, Arbitrary and hit OK. Photoshop will automatically enter the exact number of degrees you need to make the horizon (or vertical) straight.

3. History Brush

If you do not know about the History palette - this is a must have. The History palette will show you the last twenty steps you took on editing an image. To the left of each step is a box, if you were to click in that box you'll see an icon of a brush. You are telling Photoshop to select this history state. Now choose the history brush (an icon of a broush with a circular counter-clockwise arrow) and paint on your image. You are now painting a previous state of history over the image. What would this be used for? Lets say you have a portrait up that you have diffused to give a glamorous out-of-focus glow. You can now use the history brush to paint back the detail that the diffuse blurred.

4. The Magical Preference Cleaner

Is Photoshop hanging? Crashing? Afraid that you will be forced to reload? Try clearing your preferences file before you pop in the installation media. To do this, open Photoshop and immediately hold CTRL+ALT+SHIFT together and when asked, hit OK to clearing the preferences file. This will reset all preference back to normal, but this is much better than the original alternative.

5. Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts will greatly increase your workflow if you take the time to learn them. Learn only a few at a time for the tools you use most. Keyboard Shortcuts for Photoshop can be found online or through the help subsystem.

Here are some must-have shortcuts for PC users, MAC shortcuts are very similar, see your help information.

Move Document: Working on a document that fills more than the screen? Instead of zooming out and re-zooming into the area you want to work on next, hold the Spacebar and click and drag your image. The cursor becomes the hand tool for the duration you have the spacebar pressed and allows you to move around your document. When you let go, you're back to the tool you were working with.

Undo: We all know that CTRL+Z will undo a mistake. What if you want to undo multiple mistakes? Try pressing CTRL+ALT+Z to 'Step Backwards' through your history.
