Kicking off the new (calendar) year

Greetings all,

Our first meeting of the fall is coming up this Wednesday (Sept. 8th) and I wanted to take a moment and welcome everyone back. I hope you’ve had a great summer and have had a chance to get out and make some photographs. If you have, we’d like you to share one or two of them with us this Wednesday for our “What I Shot This Summer” program. Either bring some prints or send us some files electronically. This will be a chance to introduce yourself, talk a little bit about what excites you about photography, and share some of your work with us. We’ve changed the email address to which you send in your digital competition entries, the new address is:

contests@arundelcameraclub.org

Please make a note of it and use this address for the program on Wednesday so we can iron out any kinks in the submission process. Kindly submit your digital files by Monday evening so that the new contest chairs have time to get things organized. We’ll take images on thumb drives on Wednesday evening if necessary, just arrive a little early so we have time to move the files.

There is an open theme for competitions in September, so anything goes. The competition for digital images and Monochrome prints will be held on September 15th. and the competition for slides and color prints will be held on September 29th.

Our field trip for September will be to the National Zoo in Washington D.C. on either September 18th. or 19th. We usually take a look at the weather before deciding on a the actual day. You can either travel to the zoo on your own, or join us for car-pooling or caravan-ing (is that even a word??). We’ll fine tune the details the week before the field trip. This will be an excellent opportunity to photograph animals, which happens to be the contest theme for October.

Rounding out September, our program on the 22nd. will be on food photography. Steve Buchanan, a professional shooter who specializes in food, will be doing a live demonstration at the meeting just like he’d shoot for a restaurant, magazine article, or the like. Come see what it takes to make items on the menu look so mouth watering. As a bonus, you’ll also learn why you’d never want to eat the items photographed. :) He’ll explain what a food stylist does, talk about compositional and lighting decisions, and answer any questions you might have. It should be a really fun evening.

For general information and questions about the club, check out our website: http://www.arundelcameraclub.org.

That’s all for now, hope to see you Wednesday.

-Chip Bulgin

Volunteer for your club

Greetings all,

I’ve talked with Michelle Barkdoll and we still need volunteers to fill the following positions:

  • VP of Contests/Competition
  • VP of Programs
  • VP of Programs Co-Chair

Please consider volunteering, as the club can’t really function without these positions. I can’t speak for the program chair, but the competition chair primarily consists of contacting potential judges 4-6 weeks ahead of the date and writing a note of thanks afterwards. It doesn’t take too much time.

Thanks,

-Chip

All, Chip just called. Turns out this is spring break and the school is closed. So no meeting this week.
Sorry about that. I don’t have kids, so it never occurred to me.

Contribution to the Maryland zoo in honor of Howard

We have talked about making a contribution to the Maryland zoo in honor of Howard.  He’s been a docent there for many years and has given the animal keepers and other staff  many images of the animals.  I’ve talked with Steve Rosenfeld and David O’Brien, zoo personnel, who will be coordinating efforts for a memorial in honor of Howard.  According to Steve all money donated in Howard’s name will be pooled into one pot.  We’re hoping to raise a total of $2500 which is the needed amount to have a bench dedicated to Howard.  The zoo will include Beth’s wishes as to where the bench will be.

Donations can be via check (made out to Maryland Zoo, put in honor of Howard Penn in the memo line). There is a “Donation Form” that you can print from the zoo’s web site –  http://www.marylandzoo.org/membership/make-a-gift.aspx to fill in to send with your check. Checks to the zoo should be mailed to:

Development Office
Maryland Zoo in Baltimore
1876 Mansion House Drive
Druid Hill Park
Baltimore, Md, 21217
Attn:  David O’Brien
Donations can also be made by credit card via the zoo’s website – http://www.marylandzoo.org/membership/make-a-gift.aspx. Here in the dedication fields you want to check the box “in honor of” and write in “for Howard Penn” in the box.
Donations are tax deductible.  Please make sure there is a return address either on your check, letter, or  form, so that a tax acknowledgement letter can be sent back to you.
Thank you in advance for everyone’s support.  Howard meant so much to us through the camera club and as a friend.

A Friend Gone Too Soon

It is with great sadness that we must bid farewell to a friend. Howard Penn, passed away suddenly Monday November 24.  Howard apparently suffered a heart attack while he was out for a walk near his home. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Howard’s wife Beth,  their daughter, Rachel, and all of Howard’s friends and relatives.

Howard has been interested in photography for over 30 years. He was am a member of the Arundel Camera Club and has been the president for the last 10 years. In addition, he has been an Education Docent at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore for 6 years. He was a professor of mathematics.

You can view many of his pictures on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/howardpennphoto/.

Beth Penn has asked that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Maryland Zoo of Baltimore.
