According to David Wolff, one of our upcoming speakers:

<blockquote>If you can shoot from courtside as in right along the edge of the court at ends, a 50 or 85 mm fixed lens would be ideal. If you have to sit on a bleacher ( like most parents) the 70-200 is your best friend. It's heavy and if I am shooting multiple games in a day, I put a decent monopod under it. I shot the pictures from the game link below at ISO3200 with a Nikon D300 and 70-200 VR F2.8 lens for at least half of the game. The other half was a 50MM F1.8 lens. That gym is like shooting in a dungeon.

Public gymnasiums in schools are usually poorly lit. You will want the F2.8 or faster lens and high ISO. Be prepared for pictures with lots og digital noise. For fast moving sports like Basketball, LAX, Football, Soccer, you want a lens that focuses fast. The 70-200 that! For a less expensive solution, the 80-200 F2.8 is a good alternative. It does not have VR but is an excellent sports lens. It was he flagship zoom for sports before the 70-200.

You can rent these lenses from PENN camera for low daily rates. On the weekend ends they give three days for the price of one. ( Friday afternoon through Monday Noon or so. I do not know who rents lenses over in the Annapolis/Baltimore area.

My fantasy solution for sports....Two D3 bodies and one each of teh following lenses-- 85MM F1.4, 70-200 F2.8, 200MM F2 and a 400MM F2.8 ( I like seeing the sweat on their chins in high def. ) LOL

Last thing....with the 50MM I can shoot with both eyes open so I can truly see the whole game going on and anticipate much easier when a great shot is coming.

Howard shared his gift as a teacher and photographer with all members of our photo club and the other clubs in the area. When he saw something special through his lens, he would often invite others to look through his camera, after he took the photo. He was generous with his time explaining how his ohotos were achieved. Howard will be missed by all who knew him. Our prayers go out to Beth, Rachel and all their family.

I wish I had a chance to get to know Howard better. His passion for photography and love of animals were what I knew him for, and he will be greatly missed.

We were shocked and very sad upon hearing the news of Howard's passing. I've known Howard since presenting to the club at least 10 years ago and always appreciated his kind support. Howard was an excellent photographer and more importantly, a good person. Our prayers are with Howard's family at this very difficult time.
